Tentative Event Schedule for the 2006 Season | Event Maps and Notification | |
The day will begin with the Airing of the the Tartans, which is held at Augsburg Park. This traditionally was a time to lay out all your woolens in the snow to clean them. This would allow all the oils, grease, fats, and assorted critters to freeze out of the wools and you would have "fresh" plaids. We like to have everyone bring all their plaid and see how much we can lay out. Let's go for a record! We also have a short drill (length depends a lot on the weather,) and sometimes shoot off the muskets.
Following the Airing, we descend upon our members houses for a progressive dinner, or "First Footing". It is considered good luck if the first person to enter your house on New Years Day is a dark haired male stranger. Well, they don't get much stranger than we do…
The Airing of the Tartans will be at noon on the First.
The four courses for the dinner are:
1:00 Appetizers at Mary McKinley's
3:00 Soups at Cate Hesser's
5:00 Main course at McDavids'
7:00 Desserts at Byers'.
Come to as much of this event as you can! Please call or email Julie Yoder to let her know what you will be coming to and what dishes you will bring.
We encourage our brave and hardy members to join in these events. Do we need to tell you to dress warmly?
If you wish to participate, please let Julie Yoder know. We will not know about our assigned time and place for lineup until about a week before the parades. Julie will see to it that participants are advised of this essential information.
If you are even entertaining a hint of a thought that you might participate, you must fill out a waiver. Waivers will not be accepted on parade day. Waivers will be available at all First Footing events, or see Bruce or Julie Yoder.
Saturday, February 4 at noon we will be holding the Annual Members Meeting. This is your chance to vote for your new Board Members. The positions that will be open are:
Vice President (Special election to fill vacancy for the remainder of position term-1 year)
President
Treasurer
Camp Representative
If you're interested in any of these positions but have questions on the duties and responsibilities, please contact a current Board Member for more information. It's not too early to get your nomination in! Ballot for the Board Elections; Offices open: Vice President: Treasurer: (No one has been nominated) Other _________________ Bruce Yoder ______________ Other _________________ Other _________________ Camp Representative: President: Diana Steben _______________ Mary McKinley ______________ Other ______________________ Other _____________________ Please make sure that votes are emailed to Glenn McDavid, at gmcdavid@comcast.net by Feb. 2.

Minutes of Clann Tartan Board and Membership Meeting November 5, 2005 In attendance: (Board) Herb Lindorff, Bruce Yoder, Mary McKinley, Glenn McDavid, David Vavreck (Staff) Julie Yoder, Marty Byers Judy Byers, Betsy Bolton, Mia McDavid, Laurie Ford, Nick Nelson, Mercedes Tuma-Hansen, Jonathan Palmer, Jaimie Zaugg Minutes of the October Meeting were approved as corrected. OLD BUSINESS ============ MANUAL REVISION: Maeve has the new manual on disk. PAPER DOLLS: Still waiting for a report from the full committee. REPORTS ====== DANCE GUILD: Still looking for a Wednesday site. Betsy and Marty both suggested possibilities. The Guild will follow up on these leads. SWORD GUILD: Doing OK. Needs a Winter Site. Applying to use Corcoran on Thursday nights. FIBER GUILD: No report MUSIC GUILD: No report PUB NIGHT: Molly Quinn's is now closed on Tuesday. So we need a new site or a new night. The membership responded with many suggestions, and there was considerable discussion of these, including some broader issues (St. Paul/Minneapolis, smoking policy, availability of parking/access by Public Transit) The issue was referred back to Bruce. TREASURER: A Treasurer's report was submitted and discussed. A couple checks have not yet been deposited. We are still trying to get some information from the previous Treasurer. SECRETARY/COMMUNICATIONS: The Newsletter is going out in both electronic and hard copy forms. Another request for hard copy was noted. QUARTERMASTER: Welding repairs on the trailer are to be done in December at Herb's place. Tent Repairs: Looking to have fabric repairs done professionally. The Cook's Tent in particular needs work. The Quartermaster will meet with the Staff and determine the extent of the necessary work. We will get an estimate for the work from a local vendor (Harris). There are also issues with tent poles. All of the uprights for the Cook's fly should be replaced, along with the ridge pole. Pots and Lids: We need to inventory these. CAMP REP: No report COMPANY REP: No report HISTORIC SITE: Tactical next year will conflict with the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. We have dealt with such schedule conflicts in the past and should be able to manage this one. STRALSUND: Six people are definite, and two maybes. The van will leave Thursday morning and return late Monday. The event was strongly recommended by those who had been there in 2003. FUTURE TRIPS: Our next trip year will be 2007. That year the Quadricentennial of the founding of Jamestown will be celebrated. Events are being scheduled for March through October. UPCOMING EVENTS =============== Jan. 1: First Footing -- New and old staff will work together for this. St. Paul Winter Carnival Parades -- Looks OK. Maeve is tracking this. Annual Meeting (Feb. 4) -- Same day as Torchlight Parade above. Board Elections. President, Vice President (see below), Treasurer, and Camp Rep positions will be open. NEW BUSINESS ============ David resigned as Treasurer. Consideration of the By-Laws indicated that an election was necessary if the position was to be filled. Bruce resigned as VP, ran for Treasurer, and was elected to serve until the Annual Meeting on Feb. 4. This left the position of VP vacant. No nominations were made, so this position will remain vacant until the Annual Meeting. STAFF REORGANIZATION ==================== It was generally agreed that the Staff organization needed to change. There was some question about whether the Bylaws permitted this at this meeting, but the current staff positions are defined in the General Regulations, not in the ByLaws themselves, so we were able to proceed. The proposal Mary presented in recent Newsletters was taken as a starting point, and three variants emerged during the discussion and were put to a vote. The New structure is 1) Chief of Staff 2) Captain and HCF (one of each) 3) Understaff -- the terms "Henchmen" and "Henchwomen" quickly emerged for this level. We would eventually like staggered terms for the staff positions, but for now these will all be filled for one year. We may wish to alter this organization in 2006. It was noted that staff duties fell into two distinct categories: Pre- show planning and at-show execution. Communication among the staff members was seen as critical to the success of our shows. STAFF ELECTIONS =============== Rob Johnson was elected Chief of Staff Marty Byers was elected Captain Julie Yoder was elected HCF Eric Ferguson, Maeve Kane, David Vavreck, Betsy Bolton, and Mia McDavid were all willing to serve as understaff, and the newly elected Senior Staff (Rob, Marty, and Julie) invited them all to serve, OTHER BUSINESS ============== Jaimie announced that he had a copy of Jeff Nordin's bonnet pattern. Marty presented the Captain's Clann achievement award to Diana Steben, with loud applause from all. Jaimie passed on the happy news that Mark Hansen was doing very well after just having gall bladder surgery Next Board Meeting Monday, December 5, 7 PM at the Yoder's. A Staff meeting will follow immediately.

Sword Guild:
I am now taking names of MEMBERS, who are interested in learning the period correct way to wield the blades we would have used. The methods will be totally Scottish and /or common to the Scottish Island.
But, first I need your name, mailing address, phone number and what type of sword you are interested in...and, do you have such a sword.
When I have this information, we will set up a date and time to get together for our first exercise.
I hope to use some of what we learn in a skit or two during the coming years. The more blades we have to be used correctly the better we will be for the public.
So, get me this information soon and let's get started.
Sword Drill meets the THIRD Thursday of Every month, LOCATION TO BE ANNOUNCED. In January, it will be on the 19th.

Event Schedule for the 2006 Season:
Hello all,
The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.
The column titled status will include the following information.
Tentative- this means that an event organizer or clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.
Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that Maeve has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about weather or not you may be able to attend this event.
Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let Julie know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.
Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.
If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me regarding this matter
Thanks,
Rob Johnson.
