Clann Tartan is pleased to announce the opening of Colonel Gaffneis Official Sutlery!
Currently we offer tee shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, mugs, mouse pads, bumper stickers, bibs, infant creepers, steins and totes with a variety of designs.
The online store can be found at www.cafepress.com/clanntartan. Even if you don’t have internet access, you can still order items with the attached order form and catalog--just make checks out to Maeve Kane, send your order to her, and she’ll use her credit card to ship your items directly to your house. And don’t worry about Maeve taking your check and not getting you your order--she enjoys that warm fuzzy feeling she gets from helping people, Clann enjoys the profits, and you enjoy your official Col. Gaffneyis gear--what a deal! Best of all, everything is under twenty dollars, and many items are under ten!
If you think of a design or combination you’d like but don’t see--we do requests!
Send your request to Maeve at mkane@macalester.edu or on your printed order form and she’ll make it for you, no extra charge. (Please note that Clann Tartan reserves the right to refuse to do a request--our online store is registered as family and kid friendly, and we’d like to keep it that way. Also note that we reserve the right to offer your design for sale on other products if we like it.)
The online store will soon be expanding to include both the printed and CD manual, paper dolls, the cook book, pet clothing, and other items--check back often!
Maeve is pictured here wearing her Uncle Gus tee shirt, size men’s small. The front design of all shirts will be positioned like hers, and shirts with back designs will have the design placed similarly on the back. Notice the nick name on the back? It’s not part of our regular line of designs--it was custom made. Get your own custom name on the back of your shirt by making a request.
This November, we get to put all that drilling we do to good use. We have been invited to participate in a reenactment of the 1628 Siege of Stralsund. This is a battle that had many Scots involved in the Danish phase of the Thirty Years War. Reenactors from Europe have also been invited. This may be the largest 17th century reenactment since Virginia in 1997.
The event takes place at Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia. We will not need to bring any tents, as we will be staying in 18th century barracks (how cool is that!). Also, we will not be bringing our pikes; the other groups are nervous about skirmishing with our real pike heads.
There will be a number of vendors there who specialize in 17th century wares. There will opportunity for civilians to throw vegetables at the enemy, as well as dancing on Saturday night.
A write up on the siege itself will be in next month's newsletter.
Clann members voted to provide the first $100 towards travel expenses per member, up to twenty folks. We are looking at several travel options, the most attractive of which is renting a van (or two, depending on how many of use go). The options we are looking have a range of $50 to $150 per person travel expenses after Clann kicks in that $100.
We are asking people who plan to go to put down a $100 deposit by August 15th so that we can make the most efficient decision as to travel. If the deposit more than covers the travel expense, the excess will be refunded. This deposit is nonrefundable except if the trip is cancelled for whatever reason.
A tentative schedule follows, based on renting a van.

Eric said the Fort wants to do a day show with us as 1637 English colonists. No Scottish stuff, but breeches and grey coats will be fine. Both soldiers and civilians are wanted. May 21 - Work weekend at Dun Gowan May 28 - Camp Drill at Corcoran Stralsund - Maeve is looking at train prices. This looks like a very attractive alternative to renting a van. Special thanks from the Board to Maeve for her diligence in arranging all these events. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: New member, Terri Karsten TREASURER (Reporting via Mary): We have $6340.19 in the Bank. The Book from Blackwell's finally arrived. This was on the 2004 Budget. Also, we have made some changes to our banking arrangements at Wells Fargo for ease of administration. QUARTERMASTER: Absent, but submitted a report that the trailer repairs have been delayed. CAMP REP - Everything fine COMPANY REP - Same OFFICER CHANGES: Sean is now the Company Rep. Rob Portinga has resigned as Treasurer. David Vavreck will serve as Treasurer until the February Elections. Mia McDavid is in charge of flower deliveries for bereaved Clann Members. Marty thanked her for the flowers she brought to him and Judy. GUILDS ====== DRUM: Need to convert some wav files for MP3 format. Glenn will try to arrange the software conversion. If that works, Maeve can burn CD's with the resultant files. SWORD: Trying to reserve Corcoran. Summer practises will be at the Byers home. We are getting wooden practise swords. FIBER: Has a new Spindle CAMP DRILL: Going well. Summer is iffy because of the Events and Corcoran's schedule. So far Camp Drill has been all about sewing, but other activities are certainly possible. HISTORIC SITE: Work weekend on May 21. Maeve will drive up some lumber beforehand. Portapotties should be available for Tactical. COMMITTEES ========== COMMUNICATIONS: Hellen, Eric, and Glenn will take over managing the website. We will try to create an "official" contact e-mail address for Maeve (e.g. maeve@clanntartan.org). MANUAL: Maeve and Rob Johnson will be working on the next revision. Marty will review the bylaws for references to membership classes (active vs. supporting) that may need to be changed. NEW BUSINESS Michael McKenzie introduced himself and thanked Clann for printing his letter in the Newsletter. He talked for a while about what he was looking for in re-enactment and what Clann did. A cordial discussion followed about related topics, notably the interaction between the military and civilian roles. The emphasis between the two will vary depending on the event, e.g. Charles City will be very military, while Twig will be more concerned with civilian crafts. Several members emphasized that their 17th century Clann personae had nothing to do with their 21st century beliefs and activities. Glenn McDavid donated a copy of _Clan, King, and Covenant_, by John L Roberts, to the Clann library. This is a history of the Highlands in the 17th century. Night at the Pub: The Peter Watkins film _Culloden_ (1964) was shown at the April meeting, and was very well received. Meeting adjourned.

Sword Guild:
I am now taking names of MEMBERS, who are interested in learning the period correct way to wield the blades we would have used. The methods will be totally Scottish and /or common to the Scottish Island.
But, first I need your name, mailing address, phone number and what type of sword you are interested in...and, do you have such a sword.
When I have this information, we will set up a date and time to get together for our first exercise.
I hope to use some of what we learn in a skit or two during the coming years. The more blades we have to be used correctly the better we will be for the public.
So, get me this information soon and let's get started.
Sword Drill meets the THIRD Thursday of Every month Starting in July, at the home of Marty and Judy Byers. July will be on the 21st.

Hello Good People,
It looks like we have two new events added to our roster of events we would like to return to next year.
As I have stated Charles City was a fun time despite the rain and wind.
Even more exciting by all accounts was last weekends Olde World Renaissance Faire in Twig, MN. I would like to take this moment to thank all that made this event work. I would especial like to thank my Assistant Julie Yoder for taking on the job of setting up camp and feeding the troops in my absence. I look forward to a fun weekend of music and dancing next year.
We also tried something new with this event. We rented a cargo van to transport the Clann Equipment to the site. I think this solution worked well for getting the gear to the site prior to the bulk of attendees arriving. It is my hope to continue to get the gear to the site prior to people showing up. This will mean we will see more load days and un-load days.
The other good news is this will be much easier because the Clann Storage Garage is now organized. I would like to thank Marty Byers for taking the time to put up shelves. The really helped when Bruce, Julie, and myself organized and put the gear away Monday evening.
We are coming up on two events in July that should prove to be really fun.
The first is Minnesota Scottish Fare and Highland Games. This is a one day events Saturday July, 9th. The event runs from 9:00 AM till 5:30 PM. This year there is also a Ceilid from 5:30 PM– 8:00 PM. We are welcome to camp Friday and Saturday nights. The Clann Gear will arrive Friday evening. We are still working on the time and will keep you posted.
This is a wonderful celebration of Scottish History and culture. The events web site is: http://www.mnscottishfair.org. Along with a lot of music and vendors, the Vikings and the 42ed Highland Regiment will be there to play with us. This was one of the most fun events we did last year. Julie will be posting a list of members that have signed up to go in the next couple of weeks so please if you haven't all ready let my self or Julie know when you plan on attending and if you need to reserve a tent.
Please, plan on a gear load Thursday night July 7th. And plan for a un-load Sunday July 10th.
Right on the heals of this event is our annual Dun Gowan Tactical. This is a series of scripted mock battles cooked up by non other than Clann's own Don Chesney. The event takes place on Don's farm in Fredenberg, Minnesota. This year looks to be one of the biggest yet. It takes place from July 14th through the 17th. Don is encouraging all that can to come up on the 14th some the scenarios can start on the 14th. Clann gear will be on site by the evening of July 14th. Due to my schedule we need to load the trailer on evening of July 12th. I will post a more detailed schedule of the event as soon as possible. The un-load will be Monday July 18th.
The web address for the DunGowan is: http://www.dungowan.com/DunGowanFort.html.
A last piece of business, at Twig we realized that we need to have members let Camp staff know if you will need to use things like a table or bench for demos at events. When Julie and I have been figuring out what to take we didn’t account for demo needs and come lunch time some of the tables needed for eating where being used for demos. You are more that welcome to us Clann gear in any demo you are doing I just want to make sure you have what you need to do that with out it interrupting the needs of food prep.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing you at these events.

Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games - Dakota County fairgrounds, Farmington, MN, July 9th 2005
Mark your calendars! Saturday, July 9, Clann will be participating in the second annual Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. Here's the website: http://mnscottishfair.org.
We can camp Friday and Saturday nights, although the fair is at the Dakota County fairgrounds in Farmington, only about a half-hour drive from the center of the cities, so it's also very easy to day-trip. There are flush toilets and showers on the grounds and lots of free parking. This was a really great event last year, and this year promises to be even better!
R.s.v.p. as soon as possible to julieyoder@juno.com or call 651-698-8375. Remember, if you don't R.s.v.p., you don't eat!
If you would like to reserve a tent, email the quartermaster at deeptinker@yahoo.com.
If you would like more information about any event, call Julie at 651-698-8375 and I'll try to get you answers.
