ANNOUNCEMENTS - Details below
1. ROAD CLOSED – NEW ENTRY INTO MN SCOTTISH FAIR ANNOUNCED!
It's summer in Minnesota! Road Construction is underway. What a surprise!
Not even the MN Scottish Fair is safe from the infiltration of this summertime
headache.
Don Cogswell, President of MSF sends this IMPORTANT information: All
visitors to the Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games on July 9 MUST enter the
fairgrounds from Highway 3. This is due to construction on 220th Street.
I am guessing there will be signs, but forewarned, etc. . .
2. MORE FAIR INFORMATION
Don also sends this information:
If people would like some posters for the Fair, please email me your address
and how many you would need. (dcogswell at mnscottishfair.org)
Those interested in sponsorships for the Fair should send them in NOW; they
are tax deductible and very much appreciated.
See you at the Fair.
3. MINNESOTA SCOTTISH FAIR NEEDS YOU!!!
The message from Scottish Fair, V. P. Lyaman McPherson is simply this: The
fair needs VOLUNTEERS. They are not asking for a lifetime commitment, just
SOME of your time. BONUS: Don Cogswell says all Fair volunteers receive FREE
admission and a FREE T-SHIRT. WOW! Two FREES in one sentence. Heckofa deal!
Mac writes: The Minnesota Scottish Fair is still on track. As always, we are
looking for volunteers, but just as importantly, we are asking folks to
spread the news. If you would be interested in helping in this by distributing
some programs in your neighborhood, please contact Lyaman McPherson at
_lyaman at mnscottishfair.org_ (mailto:lyaman at mnscottishfair.org) or by calling
952-440-5533.
Give a note to Lyaman at lyaman at mnscottishfair.org and ask him what YOU can
do to help make this year’s fair even bigger and better than last year. The
wee Scottish gods will smile on ya.
4. Scottish Fair Goes to the Library!
Audrey McClellan, author of the excellent Scottish Islands novels and
"retired" Minneapolis Public Library System librarian has written and posted this
excellent article on the MPL website. Give it a look.

5. MSCS Updates.
In an effort to keep all members informed of the interim board's progress,
we'd like to share the following update.
We had a successful picnic meeting on Saturday, June 18. Approximately half
of our members were able to attend, which, on a gorgeous Saturday in June, we
think was amazing. In addition to our regular members, representatives from 2
new clans -- Jonathan Palmer for Clan MacFarlane and Jean Straight for Clan
Hutton -- were also present to gain more information about the organization.
These clan reps are in the process of completing membership applications.
The meeting agenda was short and sweet, focusing on the tasks that the
interim board has been charged with fulfilling until October. Those items consist
of the Rod MacRae award, the summer events (fair and RenFest), and forming a
nomination committee for general elections in October. The interim board has
moved these items forward and we are looking forward to a successful fair
event in the next few weeks. All registered clans should have received their
Fair information packages in the mail this past week. If you have not, contact
Mac MacPherson or Liz Michaelson with the fair organization.
In addition, we discussed an idea regarding "Scots in Minnesota." Jack has
spoken with the MN History Center regarding the idea of being able to host an
exhibit around this idea. If anyone wants to discuss this idea, please feel
free to contact Jack.
For those of you that were unable to attend the meeting, the newsletter and
other information handed out at the meeting is being mailed to you this week.
Finally, in order to be sure that the upcoming Scottish fair is successful,
we will be conducting a phone campaign in the next week to ask for volunteers
to work at the MCSC tent during the fair. We are asking for clans to help at
the table in 1 hour increments. Please pre-empt our "solicitation call" by
volunteering early, which also means you get to pick the best times! Special
thanks go to Merle Sykora for being our first volunteer.
As always, if you have any comments or concerns, (or you want to make that
pre-emptive phone call), you can contact any of the interim board members.
Sincerely,
Jack MacMillan Robin Lucas Larry Libhardt

8. Scottish News Public Updates posted at Grey Wolf Tavern – by Rob Portinga
The Grey Wolf Tavern – A Scottish Discussion Forum
Clann Tartan has opened a new online discussion forum, the Grey Wolf Tavern.
It never fails. We hit SEND to get the current issue of the SNIM on its way
to your email box and BINGO! We receive a piece of really important
information. Well, now, thanks to Clann Tartan we can take it immediately to the Grey
Wolf Tavern and post it. Get in the habit of checking the Forum at least once
a week for late breaking news. Best way to be sure you don't miss a thing.
A discussion forum is a place people can post and read messages on a variety
of topics. Think of it like a digital “bulletin board”, instead of just
sticking notes up anywhere on it, the board is organized into specific topics.
The Grey Wolf Tavern is dedicated to topics of interest to the Scottish
Community.
You can view the forums by going to http://greywolf.clanntartan.org –
messages can be read by anyone, but to post messages you will have to register a
username.
Currently, the Grey Wolf Tavern is where you can find current and past
issues of the Scottish News in MN Newsletter, and Babs has also started posting
copies of the Scottish Tartans Museum Newsletter for folks to read, as well as
other news of interest. (You can also get to the Grey Wolf Tavern through the
links on the clanntartan.org and tartandaymn.org websites – on the Tartan Day
sight, click on SNIM at the top of the home page, then on Grey Wolf Tavern)
There is also the Scottish News Public Updates folder. This area is open
to registered users to post about events that may have changes or come up at
the last minute and don’t make it in to the SNIM Newsletter. Please feel
free to post your groups event announcements here.
There are also other topics on Scottish history as well as current events
for folks to start various discussions. If you have a suggestion for another
category you would like to see, just send an email to info at clanntartan.org

Games. You can camp Friday and/or Saturday night. Non-electric sites are
available for $13.00 with electric sites being $17.00. Visit the games
website or contact Kirsty McCracken at 612-760-0786 for a reservation form or with
any questions.
2. Thrilling Events to fill the Day at Minnesota Scottish Fair.
In addition to everything you would expect to find at our Great Minnesota
Scottish Fair: Pipe Bands, Highland Dancing, Good Food, Good Drink, Vendors with
Scottish Goods, Liz Michaelson recently announced that the Raptor Center at
the University of Minnesota will offer two presentations during the day
featuring hawks and falcons. Bird lovers, this is for you.
3. The Irish are promoting the Scottish Fair.
This from himself, Bill Watkins: we put the news of the upcoming Scottish
Fair on the top front page of the new edition of the Irish Gazette - out now!
Thank you all, very much.
4. So, you want to be a Scottish Laird?
You've watch "Monarch of the Glen" and envied Archie MacDonald in his role
as Laird of Glen Bogle and wished you, too, could be a Scottish Laird (or
Lady). Well thanks to my erstwhile "almost" brother, Jim Harris, now you can.
Take a look at this web site and learn how easily you, yes you, can become
one of Scotland's landed gentry.
_http://www.scottishtitles.com/_ (http://www.scottishtitles.com/)
This is what Jim had to say about this remarkable opportunity:
Sis, I just hope that they mow the grass for me. As much as I would like to
be in Scotland every couple of weeks, I'm afraid that the grass would get
very long on my parcel. I'd like to have a picnic on my parcel but I would have
to be on good relations with all of the owners of parcels between mine and
the road. I wonder if its good farm land and I could grow some special oats or
something. I could graze sheep on it but they would have to be pretty small
sheep and wouldn't give much wool. I hope that it isn't too close to the
grounds where they hold the Glencairn Highland Games as I wouldn't want an errant
caber to make a big depression in it. (I'm depressed right now). That's
enough for now. I'm going to shut up and go and eat my haggis. Bro (It's a hoot.
Give it a look.)

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 25th Anniversary

hats off to the good folks from DSHA who presented such a fine event. Thanks to
all of you from all of us.
6. Macalester College Pipe Band--Back-to-Back Wins On The Road
Macalester College Pipe Band recently competed in two pipe band competitions
in Kansas City and Chicago. They did quite well at both showings.
In Kansas City, the band placed first in grade three band competitions,
best grade three drum corps and best grade three midsection (bass and tenor
drummers). The drum corps also took best drum corps overall.
In Chicago, the band placed first in grade three band competitions, best
grade three drum corps and best grade three midsection.
WOW! Nice going to all the Mac Pipe Band members, Mike Breidenbach, pipe
major and Steve Sutherland, drum major.
7. Important News from MPD – Minnesota Pipes and Drums
Minnesota Pipes and Drums is honored to have been selected as the principal
pipe band for the May 2006 National Police Week in Washington, DC. The band
will play for the President’s address to survivors of fallen officers, lead
the Emerald Society March and Service and participate in the commemorative
wreath-laying for Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).
The Band has enjoyed an ongoing commitment to the law enforcement community
for almost 15 years through our partnership with the Emerald Society of
Minnesota and the Minnesota Law-Enforcement Memorial Association. To formally
acknowledge this collaboration, the band membership has updated the band name
from Minnesota Pipes and Drums to the Minnesota Police Pipe Band. This new name
underlines the past and future support provided by the pipe band for law
enforcement entities across the State. The Band will be competing under its new
name at the Farmington games on 9 July.
